If all goes well, we will have dahlia/cocoxochitl tubers available for sale through Truelove Seeds by winter. We lifted, cleaned, and divided about 1/11th of our crop today. This will be my 6th winter storing dahlias but my first attempting to clean, divide, and ship them! Any tips welcome! I followed the recent free @floretflower tutorials, but would love to find a way to store without plastic, vermiculite, or peat moss. Do you have suggestions? Local sources of wood shavings? Thanks! Stay tuned for tuber sales! (PS the two trays in the far right are yacon tubers). #dahlia #dahliatubers #cocoxochitl

All of these dahlias (aka cocoxochitl) came from seed this year and continue to thrive in the hoop house post-frost. Their parents are all elaborate floofy fancy dahlias, yet these mostly turned out fairly simple, and open-centered. I’ll replant my favorite and evaluate for productivity, stem length and strength, and beauty. Many of these, plus the less fabulous, will also be saved for tuber taste tests. Cocoxochitl and acocotli are Aztec words for dahlia, and Aztecs are the original cultivators of this plant for its edible tubers. #cocoxochitl #acocotli #dahliaseedling #dahlia

For several years I’ve been growing the Tohono O’odham Domesticated Devils Claw from the Native Seeds/SEARCH catalog. When the green flesh falls off, the dried hooks (designed to latch onto mammoths and other large animals for seed dispersal) are used as the black thread in basket making by Tohono O’odham weavers. I learned from William Woys Weaver that the green pods can be pickled like okra when much younger than this one, and the seeds (most of which can be difficult to extract) taste like sunflower seeds. #martynia #devilsclaw #Tohonooodham #nativeseedsearch #nativeseeds #seedkeeping #seedsaving #communitygarden #basketweaving #mammoth #seeddispersal

Mountain Rose Apple Blossoms. This absolutely delicious and crisp hot-pink-fleshed apple with green skin 🍏 is from Western Oregon. This particular plant turned 3 years old last week, if it was born the day I grafted the prunings from the mother tree (which lives at Roughwood Seed Collection @roughwoodseeds) onto new root stock (as taught to me by @phillyorchards). #mountainroseapple #maluspumila #grafting #redfleshedapple #pinkfleshedapple #appleblossom

I ate a few wild leek leaves today and it tasted and felt incredible! Sweet and oniony and bright! Apparently, they are full of vitamins A and C and lots of minerals. I was lifting the entire plants in order to transplant a couple dozen into a patch in the herb garden, as recommended by Terrylyn Brant, who no longer harvests these endangered native foods from the wild. We also had a patch in a bed under a tall pine tree at the Roughwood Seed Collection. As I was lifting these, I tried to tell them about their new life and how they’d be taken care of and have lots of room to spread, but it sort of felt like trying to convince people to move to the moon. I’m hoping they do enjoy their new bed. #ramps #wildleeks #octaviabutler #alliumtricoccum #wildfood #nativefoods

I’ve been growing some in my gardens as well! Dad likes them way too much so I thought I’d start growing them so. Due to most not knowing of the woodland plants here there isn’t much pressure on the wild populations locally but I’m still trying to establish a domestic stock of them at home. Autumn 2017 I sowed some late-collected seed which I’m waiting to sprout come Spring 2019!

My annual gothic pawpaw flower photo. Pawpaws are the largest fruit native to North America (including Pennsylvania!) They put out suckers several feet from their trunk, slowly creating clonal colonies, with clusters of custard-like fruits reminiscent of the tropics. On first glance I was so excited to see one in a tree pit by our food co-op, but then I thought about the colony that is likely trying to form, knocking on the bottom side of the cement: “hello?!” #pawpaw #asiminatriloba @mariposacoop (at Mariposa Food Co-op)

Winterspinat Haldenstein is is a lovely winter spinach named after the Swiss town where it has been grown by nearly all who live there since before WWI. I received the seed years ago from William Woys Weaver, early in my time managing his Roughwood Seed Collection. The seeds are pointy, bit round! You can plant it in late fall for winter harvest, or plant it now through early spring for spring harvest.
