seedkeeping:

For several years I’ve been growing the Tohono O’odham Domesticated Devils Claw from the Native Seeds/SEARCH catalog. When the green flesh falls off, the dried hooks (designed to latch onto mammoths and other large animals for seed dispersal) are used as the black thread in basket making by Tohono O’odham weavers. I learned from William Woys Weaver that the green pods can be pickled like okra when much younger than this one, and the seeds (most of which can be difficult to extract) taste like sunflower seeds. #martynia #devilsclaw #Tohonooodham #nativeseedsearch #nativeseeds #seedkeeping #seedsaving #communitygarden #basketweaving #mammoth #seeddispersal
