In the cool glasshouse of Cambridge Botanic Garden, UK, the Leuzea conifera was producing these sculptural seed heads. This short-lived herbaceous perennial is found growing in the rocky dry scrubland and open pinewoods of Spain, Italy including Sicily, and Morocco to Tunisia. The purple florets are largely hidden by the papery bracts.
