Marsh marigold (Caltha palustris) and skunk cabbage (Symplocarpus foetidus)
In the northeastern United States, persistent snowstorms pushed back the flush of spring ephemerals by a few weeks at least. While the ground is still mostly covered in snow, today I was hoping that a few warm days in a row would have permitted some growth. I am pleased with the one ephemeral wildflower I did happen upon – a round-lobed hepatica. Hepatica is a lovely flower in the buttercup family that ranges from white to violet, its stem and leaves covered in a downy hair.

Thick moss appreciation
Social media has been dutifully reminding me that 4 years ago today I was in Puerto Williams, at the southern tip of Chile. While I’ve posted some of the plants and fungi from the trip, I never did share what remain some of my favorite pictures I’ve ever taken. Please enjoy a magical sunset over the Beagle Channel, as well as some lovely Magellanic penguins.
