Hey, everyone! So you’ve probably seen @havekat‘s art on your dash, beautiful works that they are. She’s in need of help right now navigating a family crisis, and it would just be so great if you could check out her online stores!

Thanks for reading, for helping if you’re able, and spreading the word!

hyssopandbee:

Okay, gardening friends: I have a very sunny patch right against the side of the house that’s struggling. Everything but the gaillardia is stunted because of fibrous tree roots stretching out from our neighbor’s silver maple. Any recommendations for plants that like full sun and can compete with those roots? I’m planning on taking everything out and totally redigging the plot, but they’re going to come back eventually.

Would coreopsis and gaillardia work?

Those two species have the big advantages of drought tolerance with enjoyment of the sun. Mainly aim at species that take on drought tolerance (doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be watered, but it does mean they’ll take on the silver maple better than ones that NEEED moisture all the time).

Echinacea, Rudbeckia, Centaurea, Yucca, as well as ornamental grasses are some groups that come to mind that can/may take on a little bit of drought.

Daylilies (Hemerocallis) can too but they tend to not play well with other plants; many cultivars are too competitive. Exception MAY be ones like Stella d’oro
