I drove out to Oro Valley for a plant sale this week and came home with this adorable Epithelantha micromeris. I’ve worked in this species’ natural range (in what is theoretically prime habitat) for the past few years, but I’ve never been lucky enough to spot one in the wild. So of course I have to try raising one myself!
The Astrophytum is 4-ish years old and getting steadily larger, but it’s probably still ~2 years away from blooming. It’s a slow-growing species in a slow-growing genus, but it’s starting to look more like a small version of an adult plant vs a seedling.
I’m a very serious scientist, which is why I document seedling growth using this 3.5cm toy truck I found in a parking lot. Rest assured, I apply the same rigorous standards to my own research.
My dog nibbled on this Astrophytum seedling two years ago. And then he peed on it. This is the only plant in my collection that’s received any attention from him, negative or otherwise, so it’s presumably his favorite. He has excellent taste.
Hey, guys! The second page of Chapter 2 is up on Hiveworks. This little comic is still getting on its feet, just wobbling around on shaky baby deer (goat?) legs, so any likes and reblogs you can spare will go a long way toward Bybloemen finding its audience!
