You ever see a prairie so pretty your heart breaks? Black Earth Rettenmund Prairie is 17 acres of prairie on a hillside in south-central Wisconsin that was never plowed, and it always takes my breath away.

As I get ready to go get my second goldenrod tattoo this evening (no such thing as too much goldenrod!), here’s the meditation on Solidago nemoralis, or old-field goldenrod, that I drew just over a year ago, prior to my first goldenrod tattoo.
It was a beautiful, if mosquito filled, day to draw in the sandy Mazomanie pine barrens. My Wisconsin Native Plant Communities class surveyed the species across the pine barrens.
