amorphophallus gigas (recent studies have been suggesting that the ancestor of titanum might have been a natural hybrid between this one and another in the family)
you see the trend. there are about 200 species of these plants found so far. also some of them heat up and most of them smell like rotting flesh lmao
anyway just something to remember when u use ur misshapen dick sponge
When I was in Mali we just used local names to identify things, since none of us knew the scientific names. so I had this plant:
listed as “Boua” (or as species code E70, usually) which… I don’t know what it means, but “bo” is poop in Bambara and just guessing that might have something to do with it?
Anyway, we took pictures of all the plant species we couldn’t identify (aka most of them) and sent them off to a guy at the University of Bamako and he sent us back a list of scientific names.
So I’m going through my data, and this thing flowers in the late dry season when there’s basically nothing else growing so it’s showing up on my “most common species” list for that time of year, so okay, better go look up E70 on the species ID masterlist …………. Amorphophallus aphyllus. huh. What did that look like again? …………Well I don’t know what I expected….
And then I have fucking awful working memory, so I KEPT FORGETTING which means it was the joke that kept on giving.
(you gotta have something to laugh about when you’re slogging through reams of not-very-interesting raw data, okay?)
