PASQUE FLOWER (PULSATILLA VULGARIS) AND OTHER EARLY SPRING FLOWERS

The perennial pasque plant surprises with its flowers when spring is still cold. This wild meadow anemone is a charmer. I adore its fuzzed stems and hairy flower buds as well as the unusual purple flowers. We have our small plant tucked in beside a pot of box and I think it appreciates the shelter and sun that this location provides. Also shown here growing in the herb garden is another adorable hairy plant, borage. Its blue, navy and white beaked flowers are much loved by chefs and cake decorators for adorning food. This is an enthusiastic annual self seeder that you will always have in the garden. To me it evokes medieval physic gardens. The small flowered, blue ground cover plant pictured above is veronica. Pink and blue scabiosa also flower in early spring and continue on into late spring and early summer.
