anthropocenesketchbook:

Learning about cicada killer wasps. I was interested in a group of wasps in a small tree near our apartment this summer and only belatedly realized they were not European hornets. Cicada killers are solitary and dig tunnels in which to carry cicadas and lay their eggs. The tree must have sheltered a large complex of tunnels, as there were always quite a few wasps flying around. I’ve always loved the pompiid wasps that parasitize spiders (I love spiders and their parasites), so it was great to watch another solitary parasitic wasp this summer. #sciart #easterncicadakiller #cicadakiller #cicadakillerwasp #spheciousspeciosus #parasiticwasp #naturesketching
