We’re on vacation in Maine. We saw this plant! My girlfriend said it was a pitcher plant and it eats bugs. It’s growing at the base of the Gaint Leaf Plant (skunkweed) that grows all over the bog. (submitted by @zephiraz)
dude……….the bad news is that this isn’t a pitcher plant but the good news is that you have been blessed by the presence of a Friend and a Boi, the Eastern Skunk Cabbage!
this is one of, if not my favorite, plant. i’ve gotten a few submissions with pictures of their flowers asking for ID, and while I don’t usually answer ID asks because I’m terrible at plant ID outside of like two families, this is one plant that I have a history with. the purple section you see is actually the flower; generally the blooming season starts in late february/early march and lasts two weeks for an individual, so what you’re seeing here is just a very late bloomer!!
i have…..SO much Eastern Skunk Cabbage fast facts because they are REALLY weird and cool and I know that i’ve talked about them in more depth here before and i feel like that post does it more justice (its…..quite early here lmao).
whenever i post about eastern skunk cabbages the entire anti-skunk-cabbage fandom comes out of the goddamn woodwork to tell the world that they are smelly. they cannot help being smelly, bitchith, their pollinators like the smelly. stop bullying them.
