do tumbleweeds actually blow around in the southwest or is that a myth…?

!!! They do!!!

Tumbleweed is actually an invasive species from Siberia. What happens is when the soil gets too dry the roots come out of the ground and the plant curls up into a ball so that it can blow to a new spot. When it comes into contact with wet soil its roots will unfold and it will settle down.

That is ten times more fucked up than I thought. They plant themselves again? That’s neat. I always thought they were just dead leaves and twigs in a bunch.

I like this. Tumbleweeds just fuck off when they don’t like a place, they are not like other plants who have to respect your plant rules, they are rebels.

also it’s really fucking funny to see one roll blithely onto the highway and get completely fucking obliterated by a pickup doing 80.

Tumbleweeds actually do NOT replant themselves!! The structure you see rolling across the ground have generally broken off at the stem, leaving the original roots behind. This way when they roll, they degrade and shake out all the seeds it grew during the spring. It’s a very efficient way of propagating actually, and spreads seeds way farther and faster than simply droping them or relying on wind to disperse them at the right time. That’s really why they’re so invasive and as much of a problem as they are.

What people don’t tell you?? THEY ARE COVERED IN SPIKES. they are thorny sons of bitches that dont have the decency to sit there and warn you not to touch but chase you across the field or smash into your face when you were just staring with your nose 3 inches from the dirt trying to identify a weird lichen you saw on the ground…….
