Y’all. This peace lily is Really Fucking Weird. There’s one leaf with a really odd coloration, like it thought about being a bract and then changed its mind, and then there’s a flower blooming with two spadices???? Both are coming out of the same stem, and the rest of the plant is a completely normal if chewed up peace lily. I am so fucking baffled. @tropicalhomestead, @plantanarchy, @plantyhamchuk, anyone, any thoughts on why the fuck this kid is SO WEIRD? I’m guessing it’s some kind of fasciation but man is it bizarre
@kihaku-gato – do you have any ideas? I’m stumped other than wonky plant hormones.
I’d have to agree with @syngoniums on this one that the likeliest candidate of cause is probably some gibberellic acid overdosage, especially as this genus is often advised to be given a lot of it in the nursery trade for when they’re being sold to be sure they’ll bloom and increase chances of sales. Being that the leaves and flowers come from the same crown and that spathums are modified leaves (someone please correct me if I’m wrong on that statement I had difficultly getting a straightforward answer as to what the spathum is in a peace lily’s flower and is moreso my own conclusion), it’s not that much of a stretch that it would leave to strange leaves as well as the floral deformities.
Best one can probably do is prune off the abnormalities and let it grow out of it as the GA wears off.
